The development of the vehicle dates back to 1965, when the Federal Republic of Germany and the United States decided to design a tank carrier called the Heavy Equipment Transport (HET) to carry the MBT-70 main battle tank being developed in both countries. The tractor’s main contractors were Chrysler Corporation of the United States and Fonn of the Federal Republic of Germany, while the trailer was handled by Krupp of the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1970, the program for the development of the MBT-70 and its heavy equipment transporter was canceled. The Federal Republic of Germany continued to develop a tractor called SLT50-2, also known as the Elefant tractor. The Army ordered 328 vehicles from Foon, the last of which was delivered in 1980. The vehicle and its semi-trailer can carry any armored vehicle including the Leopard 2 main battle tank equipped by the Army.
